Five years of digital policy

It’s a double-celebration for Digital Watch! In 2020, we’re celebrating the fifth anniversary of the observatory, and the 50th edition of the newsletter. Join us for our events.

The observatory was launched five years ago with the aim of providing a one-stop-shop for all global policy developments. It provided that, and much more: the latest analysis on topical issues, such as COVID-19 and contact tracing apps; a dynamic catalogue of global events, actors, instruments, and resources; and reports from major policy discussions.

The observatory is built around a taxonomy of issues, developed in 1997 by DiploFoundation head Prof. Jovan Kurbalija, Today, the taxonomy covers over 50 topics, ranging from cybersecurity and privacy, to SDGs and taxation. The newsletter, now in its 50th edition (May issue, published on 1 June), has accompanied digital policy practitioners every month with a round-up of the main trends and developments in digital policy.

The latest issue of the GIP Digital Watch newsletter, published on 1 June, is our 50th edition. We've come a long way! Read this latest issue, which includes: An overview of digital policy trends in May, including new regulations targeting social media companies, the development of contract tracing apps, and the latest cyber-attacks; data analysis that summarise the main issues throughout the newsletter editions; an overview of the current tech geopolitics between the USA and China; and a look at ICANN's recent decision to reject the proposed sale of the .org registry.

Over the years, we've also translated the newsletters into other languages, including French and Spanish. And we've redesigned the newsletter several times. Access our archive of newsletters - all 50 of them!

Navigating Geneva’s Digital Policy Landscape

Most Geneva-based institutions and organisations are now tackling digital aspects as part of their work. The Geneva digital policy landscape has therefore become richer and more diverse. How can we navigate this landscape and understand who is dealing with what, how to overcome policy silos, and how to build on the work and collaborate with other organisations to pursue common goals and solutions?

Knowing how to navigate such a rich landscape is crucial in dealing with digital issues - wherever you are based. Our event, on Tuesday, 23rd June, is therefore useful both to practitioners based in Geneva, as well as those whose work requires them to follow or collaborate with Geneva-based actors.

Six-month review of digital policy and preview of the redesigned observatory

What started out as a normal year quickly turned into a year to remember due to COVID-19 and its impact on work and life. Technology and digital policy developments were also impacted.

In a dedicated briefing on Tuesday, 30th June, the Geneva Internet Platform will run through the main trends in digital policy in the past six months, including the impact of the pandemic on technology and policy, and how technology has been helping to curb the spread. It will also look at other developments happening in the background, including cybersecurity issues, new rules on intermediary liability, and updates related to digital taxation.

The briefing will include a preview of the redesigned Digital Watch observatory. Get ready!
